ARTIST STATEMENT

I experiment with materials, techniques, and how the combinations of such can affect the finished work, and the feelings that derive from said processes. By approaching these not strictly as mediums for the work but as part of the work itself, I find I can best evoke the emotions I intend to in the viewer by testing the conditioned responses they have to colors and details and how they bounce off of one another.

Skylar Owenby is a painter and illustrator from Canton, North Carolina. She creates work heavily inspired by her childhood, when her love for art transpired while makeshifting storybooks. She often works with whimsical imagery found in children’s media and a plethora of mediums, having dabbled in photography, digital design, ceramics, and sculpture during her time at WCU, and utilizes this to aid her in the storytelling she accomplished through her work.
